Acer pips Dell for second spot in PC rankings

Acer has once again secured the number two slot in the PC vendor rankings in the second quarter of this year, knocking Dell to number three.

The Taiwanese hardware maker first occupied the number two position in the first quarter of last year, but lost it again to Dell the following quarter.

HP still leads the market however, according to preliminary figures released by research firm IDC (see story on page three).

Acer’s strength during the second quarter came from its consumer focus, says IDC senior hardware analyst Liam Gunson.

“Acer’s notebook shipments increased quite dramatically, which enabled them to take the number two position.”

According to Gunson, Acer also saw success in the consumer desktop stakes.

“The consumer desktop market has been on a fairly strong declining trend because people are migrating to notebooks, but in the second quarter consumer desktop shipments grew year on year.”

Acer country manager Rod Bassi says in order to secure second place, the company had to focus on restructuring its services division.

“We reached the end of the line with our former services arrangement and started working on a new arrangement to help growth for the next three to four years. We dealt with this around the end of quarter four last year and the start of quarter one. Acer is now starting to focus on more sales.”

Bassi confirms IDC figures that suggest consumer sales had also helped the company.

“This is an area that is strong for us and it doesn’t come down to one retailer, but is a collective effort from all our partners. We also hired two more staff for our consumer team.”

However the commercial channel is the backbone of Acer’s business, says Bassi.

“We’ve had a strong delivery of services from our distributors, in particular Dove Electronics. Although we only have six direct resellers, collectively they have been performing very well.”

With the move to number two, the company is now operating at the sharp end of the channel, says Bassi.

Bassi meanwhile could not comment on the local impact of Acer’s recent acquisition of US PC maker Gateway, referring Reseller News to the company’s Australian-based marketing manager, who was unavailable at the time of going to press.
