Dream run for Parbhu with big-brand responsibilities

Express Data’s Asmita Parbhu has been in the industry for two years and is really enjoying the diversity and fun of working in a big team, on behalf of a big brand.

The 22 year old, brought up in Auckland’s North Shore, had done some IT-related papers while at university, but getting into the industry “sort of just happened”.

After some temporary jobs helping to organise concert tickets, Parbhu thought it would be fun to get into event management and perhaps even meet some stars.

Her BA/BCom at Auckland University was focused on project management and included some arts papers she did out of interest.

However, Parbhu decided she had done enough study prior to finishing her degrees, and started in Express Data’s operations team two years ago.

A year later Parbhu was offered a product manager support role for the Sun agency and now can’t speak highly enough of the team she has joined.

“It’s a support role and it’s been really good because you stil have someone to guide you.

“Everyone in the product management team is really good. We all sit together and if you have a moment where you’re going to spaz out or you’re not sure what to do, they’ll point you in the right direction.”

Meeting partners at training events and other functions is also a highpoint, although this was more difficult at first.

“The partners are so much fun. When I first met some of them it was a bit awkward because they’re older, but basically they know how to work hard and have fun as well.”

It’s been a steep learning curve in the fast-paced environment of working with a large vendor.

“Sun has such a range of products, there’s not just one thing you learn. I’ve done heaps of learning and sometimes you still feel like you haven’t learned that much.

“There’s so much product and there’s always something new coming out.”

The day-to-day work is also diverse, involving everything from helping with quotes and orders to the training events and working with stock.

However, the work hours aren’t so taxing that they don’t leave time for weekend fun. For Parbhu, this usually means shopping or catching up with friends. Mid-week there’s also the lure of the Sylvia Park complex, near to Express Data’s premises in the Auckland suburb of Mt Wellington.

After two years in IT, Parbhu is still divided between a future in her current industry or in project management.

Whichever she chooses, she wants to continue to be in a large team.

“I’d like to be in a role that’s similar, with heaps of variety. I like the idea of working in a big team because that’s what makes the job fun.”
