Bigpond speeds to 30 Mbps in Sydney, Melbourne

Telstra BigPond has switched on Australia's fastest consumer cable broadband, with the launch last week of a 30 Mbps plan.

However, BigPond Cable Extreme will only be available to Sydney and Melbourne homes and businesses. Other parts of Telstra's HFC network will receive 17 Mbps speeds.

BigPond Group managing director, Mr Justin Milne said in a media statement that the new speeds were almost double the previous Cable Extreme speeds in Sydney and Melbourne, almost four times faster than standard cable broadband, around 120 times faster than entry level ADSL and more than 500 times faster than a dial-up internet service.

Apparently customers in Sydney and Melbourne already on the 17 Mbps Cable Extreme can get the extra speed at no further cost, if they have a compatible modem.

Customers with the standard BigPond Cable Broadband could jump from 8 Mbps to up to 30 Mbps, for under 40 cents a day extra.

In addition to the new download speeds will be an increase in upload speeds to 1 Mbps.
