Plans for an early retirement from technology are on hold for John King.
The former owner of Expert Solution Providers (ESP) joined Express Data as a product manager about three months ago, and has now been promoted to national sales manager.
The company has also recruited a new Microsoft business development manager Paul Lorrigan and Mark George as Cisco business development manager.
“Our expectation is that we’re going to see some significant growth, especially in the tier-two market,” says King.
“I look after several elements of the Express Data sales group – predominately the account managers and business development managers. These are the sort of people who are out in the reseller community promoting the products, training and selling. I’ll be primarily based in Auckland, but will also be visiting our offices in Wellington and Christchurch. I’ll also be getting over to Sydney.”
King says he initially wanted to take a break from the industry after selling ESP last year due to ill health and would have never joined Express Data if he didn’t enjoy the people.
“I was approached by a number of people at the beginning of the year and ED for me was a simple choice because of the dynamic and driven people. That fits very well with me.”
But working for someone else does take a bit of getting used to, he says.
“I now work under structures that are imposed by other people and not myself and that’s certainly different. As a product manager I was able to get a feel for the people and policies of Express Data. Now that I have started this role I am comfortable and confident.”
This is not King’s first spell at the distributor – he worked there as a contractor some 10 years ago.
King already has short-term plans.
“I have considered some small structural changes. I’m a very process-driven person, so my initial thoughts are to look at where the processes don’t exist or where they are falling down and do something about it.”
