Highly Commended: Certus Solutions

Certus Solutions was highly commended in the Best Workplace Collaboration category at the IBM Business Partner Awards for its project with the Department of Building and Housing (DBH) on the Weathertight Homes application. Last year, Certus Solutions won the category for its workflow system collaboration with Hella.

Southern region general manager, Edward McDonald, says the win is recognition not only from the reseller industry, but also its partner company IBM.

“We’ve had a very good year and this win reflects the efforts of the team and the quality of the solution. Our team really stepped up on this collaboration.”

McDonald says being an IBM partner gives the company access to products with a great reputation.

“We’ve worked with companies this year who chose an IBM platform and those who chose not to. And the companies that did are very happy with the platform and the other companies are now wishing they did choose IBM. Sometimes we have a hard time convincing companies to go with the platform because IBM is seen in New Zealand as a high-end product. The Kiwi way is to get something cheaper and cobble different bits together with tape.”

He says Certus Solutions works hard to convince companies otherwise.

“Cost is something clients often latch onto, but the problem with so called cheaper solutions is they end up costing more over time. We show them that IBM is reliable in the long run.”

Certus Solutions is a high-end boutique technical services provider with offices in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch. The company was founded in 1999 to provide strategic project management and consulting services in the local market.

“I class us as a boutique company because we never wanted to have a huge group of customers. We add value to clients and work on site with them as we’re very much about building solutions and solving problems,” says McDonald.

The company has a staff of 50 with Wellington being the largest office.

He believes that Certus Solutions, along with Gen-i, are the only local companies offering the full IBM suite.

“Business Integration, Domino and Filenet Content Management were the big products for us this year. Having the full suite is a big advantage as we don’t need to go to other resellers. However, we do collaborate with other IT companies on hosted content management for customers. We go to someone who is best of breed in that area and engage with them.”

McDonald, who previously worked at Telecom, joined Certus Solutions two years ago.

“I work as a stand-alone general manager and engage with CEOs and CIOs. It’s great as I’m involved with people management and problem solving. That’s the reason I joined Certus Solutions as I didn’t want to have a desk job.”
