Sun 'down' for Jim Hassall

After seven years at the helm, Sun Microsystems' Australia and New Zealand managing director, Jim Hassall, is hanging up his hat.

In a press statement, Hassall said it was time for a change. Sun's sales director, Duncan Bennet, will take over as acting managing director from January. The vendor is now wading through internal and external candidates for the job.

"I have been running Sun's Australian and New Zealand operations for seven years and while it has been an incredible time I am ready for a new challenge," he said. "Duncan has been a key part of Sun's growth in the region in recent years and I am very confident that this will be a smooth transition."

Hassall has been with Sun for 10 years, including seven as its A/NZ managing director. He said Sun's strong financial results over the past year, as well as its growing market share in servers and storage, made it a great time to handover to a new chief.

In its quarterly statement to September 30, Sun reported its fourth consecutive profitable quarter, with a global net income of $US89 million. It also had a one per cent increase in global revenue to $US3.22 billion.
