Sony hoping to sell 11 million PS3s by April

The PlayStation chief says he's confident in hitting the mark despite stiff competition from both Wii and Xbox 360.

The statement comes shortly after a boost in PS3 sales thanks to a November 2 price cut to US$399. According to Sony, PS3 sales have more than tripled since then.

PS3 outsold the Wii for the first time in Japan last month and sold 466,000 units in the United States during the Thanksgiving holiday rush.

With current PS3 sales at an estimated seven million units worldwide, Sony will have to move one million units per month through March 31 to hit the target.

"[PS3] is starting afresh as a console to play games with," Kaz Hirai said in the weekend. "Although pricing strategy is important, now we would like to put our strength in the number of software games."
