Game over for Wii disty

Nintendo will be seeking a new distributor for its Wii gaming console following the demise of local agent, SPI NZ.

The company, formerly known as Softprint Interactive until a name and ownership change a year ago, has gone into receivership with receivers KordaMentha reportedly called in last Friday.

While confirming the company has gone into receivership, founder and former managing director Bruce Millar says he could not comment on the reasons behind its demise.

“I haven’t been involved with the company for a few months now – whatever happened, I guess will come out in the wash.”

Millar says he sold the company, which he founded in 1995, last June and resigned as a director in March, but is saddened at its fate. “We obviously worked hard on the business and it is very sad to see it go down like this. The people involved were really great people to work with.”

SPI’s current owner and company director William Flew was unavailable to talk when contacted by Reseller News earlier today.

In addition to Nintendo, SPI was also the main local agent for Activision gaming products and was a distributor for Logitech, McAfee, Netgear, Pinnacle, Symantec and Targus.

Desmond Ling, head of fellow distributor Ingram Micro’s consumer division, says it is too soon to say whether SPI’s demise will create any opportunities for the company.

However, he says Ingram Micro’s first priority is to ensure it supports the channel for any brands shared by the two distributors.

“Our first priority is to ensure if there are brands that do overlap that we look after the supply chain for the channel. This is our main focus – looking after our vendors and customers first.”

Calls to Nintendo’s Australasian head office in Melbourne for comment were not returned by time of publication.
