Each year, analyst firm Gartner lists what it forecasts will be the strategic technologies for the coming year. Its number one pick, virtualisation, may seem a predictable choice. However, the list takes into account feedback from its clients, and its own research, along with how each technology is tracking. It says the technologies on its list will have the "potential to be disruptive to your environment or market in some way," in 2009.

In our last Quick Poll, we asked readers which type of technology worker they were finding it most difficult to recruit, amid the ongoing skills shortage.
Forty-nine percent of voters told us solution architects were in shortest supply, followed by certified engineers at 20 percent. Six percent also found developers were hard to find. Those in non-technical roles seemed easier to hire, with sales reps at 17 percent and senior managers at nine percent.
