Stability wins in Ingram Micro leadership change

There is nothing surprising about local Ingram Micro managing director Jay Miley heading off to become the distributor’s Sydney-based vice president and managing director for Australia and New Zealand.

It has long been evident that Miley was on an upward career trajectory – he did not come to New Zealand for the quiet life and inspiring scenery.

He came here to gain international experience and to build his career, with many industry pundits rightly believing that he was being groomed for bigger things.

His task here was to implement the Ingram Micro way of doing things at the local operation, which was still steeped in the processes and systems of the former Tech Pacific.

After some rejigging of the business and a series of restructures, this task is now seemingly complete, with Ingram Micro’s operation here looking its best since the merger with Tech Pacific.

Miley now has a bigger challenge lying in wait across the Tasman, where he is likely to change’s Ingram Micro’s business there in the same way as he did here, albeit it is on a far larger scale.

Based on my various encounters with Miley on both a formal and more casual basis, I believe he will succeed in this duty.

Although he had very clear expectations of what he wanted to achieve, Miley’s ability to win favour for his plans among his team, vendors and resellers always impressed.

For someone who was an “outsider” less than two years ago, he quickly established himself as a well-respected and well-liked figure in the channel community.

It is therefore regrettable to see Miley depart after a relatively short tenure on our shores.

However, his exit does have a very positive outcome, as it sees Gary Bigwood stepping up to replace Miley.

A local channel veteran, Bigwood’s promotion will be well received.

As a former member of Tech Pacific’s senior management team, Bigwood brings a sense of continuity to the new role and he will benefit from the existing relationships he enjoys both within and outside of Ingram Micro.
