Cisco EnergyWise tipped to boost cost-conscious Kiwi firms

Cisco foresees interest in its new EnergyWise initiative among New Zealand businesses looking to save money on energy.

EnergyWise measures a company’s power consumption and can automate the optimisation of power levels. Cisco network protocols can then be used to control power use. The initiative is designed to secure cost savings for IT departments through measurement and fine tuning of power use on devices connected to a Cisco network, including Power over Ethernet equipment such as IP phones and wireless access points, and IP-enabled building and lighting controllers.

Cisco’s New Zealand operations and marketing regional manager, Suzanne Hansen, says there will be a local soft launch, with the channel educated about EnergyWise through presentations and webcasts.

The products and software updates will be added to Cisco’s global price list, now that EnergyWise has been launched in the US, she says.

“I don’t think there will be much demand from the ‘green’ side, but from the cost saving side of it. If you think about it, having your resources switch off when you’re not using them, there’s a pretty good cost saving.”

The global rollout will have three phases, the first of which brings EnergyWise support to Catalyst switches and energy management for phones, video surveillance camera and wireless access points.

By mid-year, PCs, laptops and printers will join the mix, followed by building systems (heating, air conditioning, lifts, lights, fire alarm and security systems, etc.) in early 2010.

“We’ve always had a lot of energy management features in our software, anyway. This is really bringing this a bit more to the forefront,” says Hansen.

Cisco has also released a Green Business Value Calculator, for projecting cost and green house gas emission savings resulting from the adoption of Cisco EnergyWise, Cisco TelePresence, Cisco WebEx and Cisco Unified Communications. Hansen says although the calculator was built in the US, where power costs differ from those locally, it will still give users an idea of the costs enterprises incur, and the cost savings that can be achieved.
