Cellnet adds Wellington office and sales role

Distributor Cellnet is adding a Wellington office and seeking new outbound telephone sales staff.

Marketing manager Dave Clark says the outbound roles were first advertised on Seek in the fourth week of February, so it’s too early to tell whether the required skills are going to be hard to find.

These are the first roles Cellnet has advertised for a couple of months, but late last year the company hired a new Christchurch-based salesperson covering the southern region, as well as adding a new Wellington sales role.

“They’ve really only been onboard since December and they weren’t too hard to find,” says Clark.

The Christchurch salesperson replaced someone who had left, but the Wellington role is a new appointment.

Cellnet’s Wellington salesperson previously worked from home, but now both Wellington roles are office-based. Doubling the company’s representation in the capitol and adding an office “makes life a lot easier,” says Clark.

Adriaan IntHout joins existing account manager Logan Billington-Stewart, providing Cellnet with two Wellington-based salespeople responsible for lower-North Island accounts. IntHout is responsible for Cellnet’s mobile/retail business, allowing Logan to focus solely on the distributor’s IT business.

The new office, which officially opened in February, is located not far from the CBD.

Unlike vendors, developers and specialist resellers, distributors such as Cellnet need face-to-face account management skills, rather than specialist product knowledge. “Specialist skills come into play with our business development managers [BDMs],” says Clark. “We’ve got a couple of good BDMs on the IBM and Lenovo side of our IT business, but we don’t really need specialised skill in the mobile/retail space.”

IntHout, however, was previously with Orb Communications (Cellular Central), says Clark, and so has both telco industry experience and technical knowledge.

In early February Cellnet added internet security provider BullGuard’s products to its distribution portfolio for both Australia and New Zealand. Other recent announcements include exclusive New Zealand distributor rights for Navman In-car GPS, as well as Freeview certified set-top box distribution. In addition, last year IBM expanded Cellnet’s portfolio to include storage and software products.

Cellnet also added Lenovo workstations, building on its existing PC and notebook business. It will begin offering Lenovo’s new netbook this month.

At this stage, though, Cellnet has no plans to expand its range. “Like everyone, we’re just trying to do the best we can with our consolidated retail environment,” says Clark.

“If we bring on a new vendor or agency, we look at it quite seriously and put some business rules around it to make sure it makes some sense.”
