BitDefender offers consumers free security tools

Anti-malware security company BitDefender has made most of its security products free for download. These include a free edition virus scanner, anti-phishing and chat encryption.

The free versions use the same antivirus engines as other products, providing users with an efficient way to scan their PCs, according to the company.

BitDefender says the free edition does not offer real-time protection against viruses or other malware. It is aimed at users who want a simple tool on an ad-hoc basis to diagnose their system.

Anti-phishing provides browser-based protection from phishing attempts by blocking malicious web pages. Chat encryption allows users to communicate securely via YahooMessenger or Windows Live messenger, by encrypting instant messages exchanged with another PC on which a BitDefender 2009 product is installed.
