Actual Size Software picks up GFI distribution

A new Wellington-based distribution company has been established by former Observatory Crest GFI product manager John Mills to distribute the messaging and security vendor’s products.

Director Mills, who is the only employee, registered Actual Size Software with the Companies Office on July 23.

He claims Observatory Crest decided GFI no longer fitted into its distribution strategy. Observatory Crest stopped distributing the products on July 31.

“We worked out that the best way to keep continuity for the customer base was for me to form a new channel. The distribution has been transferred across with GFI’s approval.

"The other product set I’m looking to work with is the Delta health monitoring service. That’s a managed service run by Delta TSI in Tauranga which uses the GFI network tools as data gathering.”

Observatory Crest ANZ sales and marketing director Martin Christmas says GFI was dropped for a number of reasons, including sales performance and because the company was only distributing GFI in New Zealand.

“It made sense to look at technologies we could leverage across both markets. We sat down with John given his direct involvement with GFI and shared with him what we were thinking. It made sense with us to do other things and for him to focus on GFI. It was a mutually acceptable agreement for both parties.”

Mills says Actual Size Software will consider employing more staff in future.

“We’re just going to get the business up and running and I may look later on at bringing on additional staff to cover the market as needed.”

His strategy is to grow GFI’s business by establishing additional reseller channels. Mills is based in Wellington, and uses the location as a base from which to visit North and South Island customers.

He worked at Observatory Crest for six years and began his IT career in 1988. However, he took time away from IT to be a musician for 10 years in the early 1990s.

Soft Solutions is still also a GFI distributor, says business development manager Paul Leslie.

“We have not been told that we’re losing our distribution or anything like that. It may be that Observatory Crest wants to focus on F5. F5 is more opportunity driven whereas GFI is about distribution and run rate business,” Leslie claims.
