HTC formalises accessories distribution

JMB Distribution is gearing up to get mobile vendor HTC’s name more known in the local market, following its elevation to ANZ master distributor.

The partnership means JMB will provide accessory products to HTC’s stable of distributors, which locally includes Brightpoint and Cellnet.

HTC’s ANZ sales and marketing director Anthony Petts says the company did not previously have a New Zealand distributor for its accessories business, but has had an informal arrangement with Brightpoint for 18 months.

“Brightpoint is very keen to work with JMB on procuring accessories for their customers through that channel. This is our first major step to grow our accessories. We’ve had a good expansion on our phone business in the ANZ market, so the accessory business is the natural progression.”

Petts adds that JMB’s warehousing capability in Australia and local knowledge, means his company can approach the relevant distributors both in Australia and New Zealand.

JMB director Will Phillips says the deal recognises HTC needed to boost the selling of accessories to complement those of handsets.

“We only deal in PDA and smartphone accessories. Accessories tend to be further down the food chain and the purpose of our involvement is to raise it up.”

Phillips says the company doesn’t have warehousing facilities in New Zealand at present but ships product over from Australia.

“Because the product has not been readily available, we’ve got to walk before we run. We need to get the message out there that the product is here and that takes a while. It would be nice to have a business to support the distributors direct in New Zealand and we wouldn’t discount that.”

Reseller News contacted Brightpoint country manager James Watters for comment but he did not return calls before deadline.
