Dick Smith needs Nerds

Technology support firm Need A Nerd will provide support services in twelve cities for retail chain Dick Smith Electronics, under a newly-announced deal. Need A Nerd will offer on site advice, installation, fault repair and training initially in Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, Palmerston North, Wanganui, Levin, Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill. Need a Nerd's "nerd creator" Adam Dunkerly says more consumers are buying technology, but struggle to set it up and maintain it. He says buyers are frustrated with poor post-purchase support, and get only a small amount of the value a product is capable of offering. “The technology sector is increasingly converging with the integration of computers, communication, home entertainment / automation and security. While users have increased access to technology through lower pricing, they are increasingly experiencing difficulty setting up, using, and solving issues when they arise. “They also don’t have the time to get technology up and running and want to get it set up right the first time,” Dunkerley says. Need a Nerd says the deal will help it grow nationally through new franchises and company-owned operations. It says it is receiving more enquiries about new franchises and is in negotiations for new territory franchises to be established.

Sizing up the NZ security spectrum - Where's the channel sweet spot?

From new extortion schemes, outside threats and rising cyber attacks, the art of securing the enterprise has seldom been so complex or challenging. With distance no longer a viable defence, Kiwi businesses are fighting to stay ahead of the security curve. In total, 28 per cent of local businesses faced a cyber attack last year, with the number in New Zealand set to rise in 2017. Yet amidst the sensationalism, media headlines and ongoing high profile breaches, confusion floods the channel, as partners seek strategic methods to combat rising sophistication from attackers. In sizing up the security spectrum, this Reseller News roundtable - in association with F5 Networks, Kaspersky Lab, Tech Data, Sophos and SonicWall - assessed where the channel sweet spot is within the New Zealand channel.
