Asus has been knocked off the top spot for netbook computers and dropped out of the top five for overall PC sales in Australia, according to new data from analyst firm, Gartner.
In the netbook category Acer was number one in the April to June quarter in 2009 followed by Asus in second, MSI, HP and Lenovo. MSI’s strong and sudden growth pushed Dell from the top five.
“Acer is ranked number one because of their marketing campaign and their channel strategies,” Gartner research analyst, Eileen He, said.
“The result is similar across Asia-Pacific. After advertising and product design changes, Acer has bounced to number one.”
The analyst also said MSI’s sudden jump in Australian netbook market share rankings was due to a strong channel strategy and a boost in advertising. But she does not believe MSI can break into the top two in the near future.
Gartner figures show a dramatic 398.4 percent year on year jump in mini-notebook sales during Q2, 2009. General consumers represent 90.3 percent of the subcategory, which now makes up 14.3 percent of total mobile PC sales.
The research firm also echoed views that the recent surge in telco carriers offering netbooks through their own distribution channels as being an influential factor.
“Gartner believes vendors should look into alternative channels, such as telecom retailers, to resell mobile PCs, and work with telecom service providers on bundling and subsidising PCs with broadband plans,” the company’s statement said.
Asus’ netbook woes also brought its general PC figures down, dropping two places to sixth in a single quarter. HP maintained the top spot followed by Dell and Acer with Toshiba jumping to fourth and Apple maintaining fifth place.
