UCOL sticks with Vista in 250 PC upgrade

Palmerston North’s Universal College of Learning (UCOL) has gone with Vista Home for its PC upgrade, despite its IT department running the release candidate of Windows 7.

Director of IS and T Steve Sorsby says the decision was made due to cheaper software costs and because it has a campus agreement with Microsoft. UCOL is already running the Business edition of Vista.

“We can put on the lowest cost Microsoft Windows because it will be upgraded. We will probably go to Windows 7 mid next year.”

UCOL operates three campuses in Palmerston North, Wanganui and Masterton. Tender documents released this week state it needs 250 PCs as part of a three year agreement.

The deadline for replies is Friday, October 16. More details are available on the Government Electronic Tenders website under ICCNZ reference number 27440.
