Greenpeace urges IT companies to reduce emissions

IT companies are not doing as much as they can to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to the latest Greenpeace Cool IT leaderboard.

Companies are scored by Greenpeace on their support for emissions reductions and efforts to reduce emissions. IBM, HP and Fujitsu took out the top three places with scores of 43, 42 and 33 out of 100. Google, a new entry on the leaderboard, came in at fourth with a score of 32.

Sun and Dell which took out numbers two and three in the May 2009 leaderboard dropped back to places eight and nine.

IBM maintained first spot due to a range of climate initiatives and action to reduce its own emissions. HP moved to spot two by providing more comprehensive information on how its climate plans can reduce global emissions.

According to Greenpeace NZ communications manager Suzette Jackson, the IT industry will profit from emissions reduction targets but it is not coming close to its potential of leading the way to carbon economy.

“IT giants like Microsoft, Google and IBM need to put their weight behind a strong deal at the Copenhagen Climate summit or the climate will lose out to negative lobbying by dirty industries.”
