Distributor Connector Systems’ ownership has changed after being a family-owned and operated firm for more than three decades.
Dale Smith, a chartered accountant with a background in logistics companies outside the IT industry, has formed a new company, Connector Systems Holdings, to acquire the assets of Connector Systems.
The firm was previously run by the Gurr family, including CEO Andrew Gurr and managing director Brian Gurr, Andrew’s father. The new deal was inked on 23 December.
Established in 1979, the company began by offering cables, industrial connectors and components, but over the years has added networking, unified communications, government infrastructure project management and engineering services and support to its specialisations.
In 2006 its UC portfolio was boosted by signing with IP connectivity provider Shoretel.
Smith says he was actively seeking a company to buy.
“My investment decision had to tick a lot of boxes. It had to be a well-established company, it has to have some scale that I can look to grow the business from, and it had to be one I was interested in.
“I enjoy technology and I’m interested in what it has to offer.”
The Gurrs will be involved in a transition period as Smith takes the helm, he says.
Connector Systems will no longer focus on project management and engineering services, but will be a value added distributor and importer, says Smith.
“We’re now completely focused on import and distribution and supplying through the channel only,” says Smith. “We like to see ourselves adding value to our clients, we’ve got huge knowledge in here and we want people to come to us for that.”
The company now has about 25 staff, with the only addition since the deal being that of a financial controller, says Smith.
Although it’s too early to give details, Smith says the company will be hunting new agencies and more partners.
“We’re actively looking at our product offerings and will be expanding into various other opportunities in the short to medium term.”
Andrew Gurr has become director of a new company, Fusion Networks, incorporated last year.
Gurr sees opportunity to develop the services business previously built up by Connector Systems and has employed 12 staff from the company, made up of project managers, engineers and developers.
He says the decision to focus on this part of the business was prompted by the impending retirement of his parents, Brian and Diane Gurr, who established the company. Gurr joined Connector Systems about 11 years ago.
“We had built up quite a specialist set of people in networks and some customers have come to rely on the skills of that team.
“There’s an opportunity to expand that by working with some large customers and [offering] some third-party engineering services for organisations that don’t have those skills.”
Fusion Networks will build on an ability to serve mid-size and larger customers’ complex networking requirements, says Gurr.
“When it comes to complex networks there’s a little less skill out there compared to normal IT activity. We’ve found quite a good niche there.”
