Soft Solutions has begun offering Corel video and photo software to retailers through its recently acquired division Mistral Software.
Soft Solutions was already distributing Corel, but managing director Chris Fitzgerald says it saw the potential to add the Corel offering with Nuance Communications speech and imaging.
“As the Mistral team were going out to their customers, they found there was scope to offer that [Corel] product. Stock of the new Corel Draw X5 will be going out through Harvey Norman stores in the next fortnight.”
Fitzgerald says staff and specialist resellers were interested in products they could sell as an add-on to a PC purchase.
“Our products are mainly in the network management, security and storage area, but Corel fits the bill. It is a natural add-on for anyone buying a camera or computer looking to do some photo or video processing.”
However, he says there are no plans to start adding games, joysticks or laptop cases to the retail range.
“It is very important for us to keep in mind at Soft Solutions we are an added value distributor. We represent products where we can add value to the vendor beyond getting boxes on shelves.” This includes providing training for retail staff and resellers.
“We saw with Corel we could add value, as it has a good story and better margin for the retailer or reseller. There are some new products in the Corel line-up and we have had a good response so far.”
Fitzgerald adds there is potential for selling Corel in the medium and large enterprise space.
“We’re also getting crossover with Nuance Naturally Speaking going out to the corporate customers, who we have traditionally represented.”
The company has no plans to grow division staff numbers at present. The Mistral division has three staff consisting of North Island representative Chris Leslie and South Island representative Janette Cannell along with former Mistral managing director Megan Twentyman, who is training Soft Solutions’ employees in retail management.
At the time of the merger in January, Twentyman said the plan was to grow Nuance’s retail and corporate presence.
