Intel has flagged a worldwide channel program revamp to be launched early next year.
At the chip vendor’s Solutions Summit in Macau, Intel reseller channel director Asia-Pacific, Kamil Hassan, said the current partner scheme was inadequate when it came to supporting new types of technologies and solutions.
“The channel program we have today is just focused on integrators so if you integrate your own PC, our program can help you,” he said. “But some of our guys are selling, for example, notebooks and Intel doesn’t help them with that.”
Intel wants to move from being hardware and components focused to supporting a host of products featuring Intel parts. They include embedded devices using the vendor’s Atom microprocessor chips.
“So we are going to build our expertise and help them to sell those products also,” Hassan said.
The current channel programme, which favours integrators, will remain and Intel will build new pillars customised to different segments alongside it.
Intel has been working on channel membership for about nine months and details are still sketchy but Hassan said matchmaking resellers and distributors with Intel original device manufacturers (ODMs) will be at the core of its plans.
Types of benefits and support to resellers have yet to be determined. Programs will be tweaked according to the needs of different regions.
The vendor is already actively pairing partners with suitable ODMs that deal with a range of different devices including tablet PCs.
“You have the product, the ODM and you know what you are doing as well as what solutions to stack over it, but how do you sell it?” Hassan said. “It is not as simple as selling PCs through the channel.”
