eDay snares growing pile of waste

The organisers of eDay, an event where homes, schools and businesses can dispose of old computer equipment and cellphones, say the largest number of cars passed through dropoff sites since it began in 2007.

77,000 items were dropped off for recycling in 53 sites nationwide, up from 38 sites last year.

“The amount collected today filled over 110 shipping containers which. It demonstrates that there [are] a lot of old computers out there being stored in cupboards and garages and New Zealanders want a solution to disposing of this gear in an environmentally friendly way,” says organiser Laurence Zwimpfer.

The recycling of the equipment collected will be managed under an agreement between the Ministry for the Environment and a computer recycler, yet to be appointed.

Collectable computers identified in Wellington are being auctioned on Trade Me, with proceeds contributing to some of the costs of eDay. Items include an Apple IIe, a Commodore Amiga, several old Macintosh computers and some Dick Smith PCs with built-in tape decks, circa 1980, organisers say.
