Duo expands after 16 years with two brands

Storage and security-specialist distributor Duo has added three new, exclusive agencies to its roster after offering only two brands since its establishment 16 years ago.

The Wellington-headquartered firm had only one range - storage products from Simpletech - for 13 years and added secure drive vendor Ironkey three years ago.

It is now adding US personal storage specialist Apricorn to its books, along with portable secure data storage vendor Datalocker, as well as ranges from hardware encryption firm Hiddn, based in Norway.

Duo says the agencies fit with its strategy of remaining niche specialists, and any additions must complement the company’s core brands.

They say customer feedback has prompted the broadening of the portfolio.

“Customers have come to us and said they like engaging with us and enjoy the support we can offer. But we still need to ensure [the additional products] are complementary to the ones we have,” says director Kendra Ross, who founded the company with co-director Jackie Hatchwell.

The firm also plans to enter the internal storage market with two additional agencies that it has yet to reveal.

The distributor achieved 20 percent year on year revenue growth and 10 percent profit growth, and the pair are set to add to the current team of five staff in New Zealand and two in the Sydney office.

They want to recruit a business development manager to build local operations and a systems engineer who will be based locally, but also support the Australian business.

Duo is also considering establishing a professional services consultancy next year.

“Resellers are generalists as architects and as support staff,” says Ross. “In the security [market] we’re seeing more of a requirement for professional services.” Hatchwell adds the consultancy services would be a natural extension of the solutions approach it takes to deployments with Ironkey.

The distributor has for the past seven months been developing a new website, which the pair say will add more partner resources.

These include white papers, blogs, customer testimonials and online video. It is expected the site will be live on 1 December.
