Juniper bolsters New Zealand staff

Juniper Networks appointed three new staff members here between October and January, in anticipation of increased activity this year. The company hired Raj Unnikrishnan as commercial account manager, Dave Sharples as systems engineer and Alex Grant as partner account manager. Juniper will draw on its experience to help the new staff amplify the company’s current presence in two markets by fostering channel relationships.

“We have a strong enterprise and government business and also a service provider business, and we’re investing across both of those areas,” says Ian Quinn, Juniper’s New Zealand country manager. “Plus, with our partners, we want to support them because they are the key part of how we go to market.”

The three appointments bring Juniper Networks’ staff in this country to 10 people working out of offices in Wellington and Auckland. The company has dozens of partners around the country including IBM, Gen-i, TelstraClear and NEC.

Globally, Juniper Networks grew 23 percent year-over-year at the end of 2010. Quinn says the company also grew in New Zealand, especially toward the end of 2010.

“We saw a lot of activity — especially in datacentres — toward the end of last year,” he says. “That is fuelling a lot of [New Zealand growth]. And we are hoping to take advantage of that growth trough the coming year.”

“[Unnikrishnan] came on board and has been working with us since October and Alex and Dave kicked off at the beginning of January,” Quinn says. “So it has really been an investment in the market for 2011.”

Unnikrishnan came to Juniper from Kordia where he was the sales and marketing development manager. Quinn says he will be working with corporate and government clients, pushing the company’s networking and security solutions and to “educate them on the value that we can bring their businesses”.

Sharples and Grant came to Juniper from Alcatel-Lucent.

Sharples, who was a technical account manager for Alcatel, will be concentrating on service provider customers, supporting them through analysing new projects, according to Quinn, and helping them to scale infrastructure and launch new services.

Grant, who was an account direct for Alcatel-Lucent, will be working with partners to build “capability around joint solutions,” according to Juniper.

“In Alex’s case, as a company we only go to market through partners,” Quinn says. “Alex’s addition locally gives us the ability to be a lot more proactive with our New Zealand partners and to help them understand how our solutions can help them grow their own businesses.”

All three appointments will be based in Auckland. Quinn says that along with the hires, Juniper is running nationwide seminars on datacentres and security in virtualised environments.
