HP takes major launch on the road

Vendor joins distributors on campaign to drum up interest among resellers

HP is embarking on an aggressive reseller campaign for its ProLiant Gen8 line of server products.

The vendor will be starting in Invercargill on March 6, working its way up through the country, with two or three shows a week, ending in Whangarei on March 29.

The roadshow coincides with the introduction of the Gen-8 server platform, a data centre server range that adds automation and support features designed to make it easier to deploy and manage datacentres. The roadshow will introduce the first products to be rolled out in the Gen-8 range, which is part of HP’s Project Voyager, the third of the vendor’s three-stage, global project focused on data centre architecture.

The organisation says the 11-city tour attracted more than 1000 registrants by the third week of Februrary, a sign that there is some interest in a range that HP sees as a “game changer” for its data centre business.

“This will impact all our resellers who deal with from high end corporates to SMB customers running Microsoft Small Business Server,” says Nigel Owen, HP’s ProLiant & BladeSystem Business Manager.

Owen will be leading the roadshow, with representatives of HP’s two Enterprise Servers, Storage and Networking line distributors, Exeed and Ingram Micro, on hand. The company also plans to hold an event to demonstrate the new line to customers in April in Auckland.

Features new to Gen8 centre around automating previously manual tasks to free up customer time, and to provide flexible “proactive” support, by either connecting the customer to its reseller or directly to HP through its online portal, ProActive Insight.

New hardware allows customers to plug a server into a rack without having to manually enter data for inventory and power management.

“To date, when you plug a server in a rack, you would then have to apply additiona items required to phyiscially track the servers in the rack for power usage, redundant power, all those things,” he says. “This platrform provides a process so that as soon as you plug a server in to a a rack you now can avoid the errors that come with manual inventory tracking.”

HP also has set out to improve storage performance with improved data mirroring technology to cut initialisation time for redundant arrays.

Resellers and customers will have access to apps for logging support calls, monitoring warranty status, and to connect directly to a server for management..

The vendor has more than 3,500 resellers in New Zealand.

“We’re always looking for new resellers,” Owen say. “Gen8 is obviously of interest to existing resellers and the distirbutors assist us in who has registered in the last 12 months but may have not been to our regular roadshow.”

Owen hopes the April event in Auckland featuring speakers from overseas will attract new resellers as well.
