Microsoft launches cloud-optimised OS

Windows Server 2012 launched at Tech Ed event in Auckland

Microsoft has today launched its cloud-optimised OS, Windows Server 2012, at the vendor's annual TechEd conference, in Auckland.

"Windows Server 2012 is the world's first genuine Cloud OS, which has been built from the cloud up to provide one consistent platform across private, hosted and public cloud environments," says Bradley Borrows, Azure and Server Business Group lead for Microsoft New Zealand.

“Microsoft’s unique legacy in the most widely used operating systems, applications and cloud services positions us to deliver the Cloud OS, based on Windows Server and Windows Azure, to help customers achieve a datacenter without boundaries," he adds.

Features of the new OS include Hyper-V, network virtualisation and PowerShell.

"Windows Server 2012 helps us to transition our clients to private, hybrid or public clouds, maximising the many opportunities that exist there, allowing our customers to deploy and manage their applications and infrastructure more efficiently and with a greater degree of flexibility than ever before," says Tony Stewart, CEO of Intergen.

According to Pablo Garcia, director of Softsource, "the new features of Windows Sever 2012 will expand our capabilities, offering [our] clients more processing power, storage and flexibility to assist with their growth and reducing their costs".

“We operate a fleet of synchronised modular data centres and anticipate new opportunities for automated management, scalability, and high availability with Windows Server 2012. The licensing model is great, too, which means we can offer compelling pricing to our clients,” says Keith Archibald, Innovation Programme manager at Revera. Microsoft TechEd conference is currently taking place in Auckland, at the Sky City Convention Centre, this week.

More than two thousand IT professionals and software developers are currently in Auckland for the three day conference, to listen to more than 140 international and local technology experts.

“We are very proud of TechEd as it brings together some of the greatest technology minds from around the world to share best practice and learn about the latest software, and the best ways to create innovative solutions for their businesses and customers," says Microsoft NZ's managing director Paul Muckleston.

This will be the 17th year for TechEd New Zealand, and additions this year include the Microsoft Certification Centre and an on-site Exam Cram room in partnership with Auldhouse, and Hands on Labs Online which will be available for 30 days post event. A selection of TechEd sessions will be available online after the event concludes at www.microsoft.co.nz/teched, for those in the IT field who are unable to attend.
