Westcon moves Auckland office, but stays in the neighborhood

Distributor shifting to new headquarters, doubling its office and warehouse space

Westcon has moved its Auckland area headquarters to a new building, not too far away from the previous one.

The distributor has been shifting in stages to its new facility less than a kilometre from its former Albany location on Arrenway Drive, to 32 Canaveral Drive.

The company officially began doing business on Canaveral Drive on October 8. Although Westcon is effectively continuing to do business as usual, the relocation will not have been finalised until this weekend, according to Dave Rosenberg, Westcon’s New Zealand managing director.

“The basic reason for the move is the business is growing,” says Rosenberg. “We moved into the old premises in 2000, and over those years we’ve gone from just being in the bottom floor to popping out at the seams. So moving to a new building caters to some of our requirements that we are starting to do for the channel.”

Rosenberg says the new facility doubles the size of its offices and warehouse space, and features higher ceilings than its previous building.

“A lot of the relocation is about building an environment for the business’s future,” Rosenberg adds. “Distribution is forever training and for us it’s ensuring our three- and five-year goals of what we want to be and how we want to dsistirbute.”

According to the company website, the new location includes a solution provisioning room, training facilities, and a Westcon LEAP Centre for demonstrating and designing solutions.

Staff count remains the same at about 100, but Rosenberg says there aren’t plans to bring on “massive amounts” of new hires in the near future.

Rosenberg says Westcon continues to add positions as they have done, according to their growth. He described the market as “tough at the moment” but adds that the distributor is “performing reasonably well”.

Rosenberg, when queried about Ingram Micro, described the staff reduction and restructuring as a “sad sitution for them and for the industry”.

“My philosophy is we will focus on what we do and I believe we do it well,” he says. “Businesses go through challenges, but I hope [what’s happening at Ingram] never happens to us.”

Westcon continues to focus on bundling of networking and storage solutions, with the recent announcement that pre-sales consultant Ivan Pecirov became the first person in New Zealand to achieve architecture accreditation through VCE, a company established by Cisco, EMC and others to provide networking solutions as part of an integrated management suite.
