Gadgets are growing on us Australians, with the average number of larger electronic devices per person calculated at 2.6 in the country, according to a new infographic by Sophos' Naked Security site.
The global figure is tallied at 2.9, with German residents topping the count with 3.1 devices per person. The US comes in second with three on average, followed by Canada and the UK (both with 2.7), and Australia.

While the infographic is based on a survey of only 2226 respondents globally and should, therefore, not be cited as a complete indicator of true averages, it does provide some interesting (and perhaps somewhat predictable) insights into hardware and operating system adoption. For example, the largest number of devices carried by a respondent is recorded at 12, according to Sophos.
The infographic reveals that the smartphone is, by quite a margin, the most popular device carried, with 85 per cent of respondents owning one. Laptops are still up there, owned by 65 per cent, followed by tablets (48 per cent), MP3 players (40 per cent), and eReaders (29 per cent).
While Windows is the most popular laptop OS, accounting for 49 per cent of the respondents' and more than doubling Apple's OSX which sits at 22 per cent, it sits last on the phone front, making up only 3.4 per cent of smartphone devices.
Android leads the smartphone category, with 40.9 per cent of users stating it is their OS of choice, closely followed by iOS at 40.5 per cent. Although Blackberry is deemed by many as dying, if not dead, the OS sits third at 8.9 per cent.
Of those Naked Security considers 'Mac users', 62 per cent carry the iPhone and 45 per cent the iPad. Interestingly, 24 per cent of this user group picked an Android smartphone and 28 per cent an Android tablet.
Of the 'Windows and Linux users', Android is the pick for 44 and 56 per cent in terms of smartphones, respectively. The results for tablets are 36 and 41 per cent, respectively.
