New tablet, new opportunities

HP's new ElitePad 900 represents a new opportunity for resellers to engage with customers, says the vendor

The mobile device market is increasingly full of choices, with smart devices to suit any taste and industry vertical. HP's new enterprise tablet - ElitePad 900 - aims to cover as many verticals as possible.

The vendor has announced the New Zealand release of the ultrathin tablet, equipped with Windows 8, and especially designed for enterprises.

The business tablet is part of HP's "Smart Jacket ecosystem" announcement, a suite of cases for the tablet that adapt it to different uses. Among the different available options, the company will release rugged jackets (especially aimed at field workers), a productivity jacket (with a keyboard) and also a retail POS jacket that turns the tablet into a point-of-sale device.

"Businesses need to face a tough purchase decision for tech products: how to find a product that will keep employees happy and help them be more productive, while also making sure their IT department can secure and manage it," says Simon Molloy, market development manager for HP Business Notebooks in New Zealand.

Molloy adds that the tablet suits a range of business customers, especially those who travel frequently and work remotely.

"Business people today are uncompromising in their need for a total technology package which helps them be more productive. We know people want a device that spans the office and off-site locations for all their needs from presentations, email, photos or video calls - and looks good to boot. The development of this product has been about combining all those needs effectively," he adds.

According to Molloy, the tablet "has all the business value of a desktop".

The HP market development manager says the company expects a lot of its customers to adapt to the ElitePad as their only device, mostly due to the expansion options offered by the different smart jackets and the ability to use a mobile docking station. "The smart jacket concept is key to our strategy," he says.

He says that, for resellers, the "go to market strategy is the same" but adds that he thinks the device provides "enhanced opportunities for them". "There are a lot of added value services around this technology."

The ElitePad 900 is available in New Zealand at a starting price of approximately $1095, excluding GST.
