Vodafone discontinues action, XT launch delayed

Telecom's XT to go live by the end of May

Vodafone and Telecom have nutted out a solution to resolve the alleged network interference issues that led them both to the High Court in Auckland this week.

Telecom has postponed its XT launch until the end of May as part of the deal.

Telecom spokesman Mark Watts says the network won't go live for customers as planned next week, but scheduled launch events will go ahead.

"The new network is coming," he says. "It's been delayed but that's in the context of an agreement we are happy with."

Vodafone, in a statement released this morning, says the agreement has been reached to achieve the best outcome for customers, the telecommunications industry and all New Zealanders.

Telecom, it says, has agreed to extend its network filter installation programme, in order to help resolve the interference issues affecting Vodafone mobile customers.

The Telecommunications Users' Association of NZ welcomed the settlement.

“This court action was a flashback to the nineteen nineties when the telecommunications companies were constantly in court against one another,” TUANZ chief executive Ernie Newman said in a statement.

“Since then the industry had been working together far better than before. This episode was an aberration.

“Perhaps Vodafone CEO Russell Stanners, with Telecom’s Paul Reynolds, should spend a weekend on a desert island and not return until they have restored lines of communication and re-learned each other’s phone numbers?"

Newman says users look forward to a new competitive environment arising from the delayed launch of the XT network.
