‘Geeks’ won’t chase WIT market

Will continue to focus on target audience of women in more technical IT roles.

The head of Girl Geeks’ New Zealand chapter, Amanda Jackson, says it will stick to targeting more technical IT women rather than try to fill the gaps left by Women in Technology (WIT). Both Jackson, a developer at Fronde, and former WIT general manager Cheryl Horo say WIT is no longer running, with Horo saying there has been no activity from the organisation since she left last year.

Incorporated in 2001, the Women in Technology website domain is now parked and the Auckland phone number disconnected, however at the time of writing it remained registered with the Companies Office.

Jackson says a number of attendees at the most recent Girl Geek dinner in Auckland last month told her WIT was no longer operating. “It was very quietly done. They just sort of disappeared.”

However, she says her organisation started locally two years ago by serving a separate audience to WIT and will continue to do so.

“We’ll still go after a different part of the market. The people who come to Girl Geek dinners aren’t interested in juggling work and their career. We’re more interested in the cool things that are going on.”

Girl Geeks’ events are more about knowledge sharing than about supporting women, says Jackson.
