New skills storm brewing, says Hudson ICT

Trans-Tasman research shows strategic, project-centric skills are in high demand.

A complex technology skills crisis may be looming, according to new trans-Tasman research from Hudson ICT. The report – Economic Recovery And The New IT Skills Crisis – says skills shortages in the sector in New Zealand and Australia are far more involved than simply a lack of staff to cover greater volumes of work.

The re-emergence of projects after the global economic downturn has combined with other trends – such as an increasing drive for alignment between business and technology needs, and a growing emphasis on web-based, customer-facing work – to create a need for strategic roles.

These include positions in business analysis, enterprise architecture, testing and project management. A shortage in the supply of suitably-qualified people could create a project bottleneck that will have an impact as negative as the recession itself, the report claims.
