IBM introduces Public Key Infrastructure in New Zealand

Infrastructure will be housed in the company's new data centre

IBM has just announced the launch of its Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) service in New Zealand. The service will be available to New Zealand businesses from 1 January. PKI is a fast growing requirement worldwide to ensure that business transactions are secure and a large number of organisations in New Zealand have a PKI requirement.

According to IBM, the need for digital privacy certificates when adopting new devices or software or when moving to an online business transaction model is one of the main drivers for PKI adoption. However, small companies still face issues in this area, as implementation of PKI is often costly.

“The widespread deployment of PKI in New Zealand has been hindered by the cost and infrastructure requirements that businesses are burdened with. The new IBM PKI Vault Service we are introducing will reduce the cost, risk and need for additional infrastructure while offering organisations the security solutions they need to support their business requirements,” said Greg Farmer, global technology services executive for IBM New Zealand.

IBM will house the PKI infrastructure within the data centre which will be open next year and which, according to the company, will incorporate “the best of IBM’s extensive ‘green data centre’ technologies”.

Customers will be able to access the infrastructure via VPN connection over the internet or private network connection (WAN).
