Huawei set to unveil 6.1in Ascend Mate Android phone Down Under

Huawei is expected to launch a smartphone with the largest screen in the world in Australia next week, following invitations sent to local media today to attend "a bigger multimedia experience".

Unveiled back in February at the the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the Huawei Ascend Mate features a whopping 6.1in display, making it larger than the popular, oversized Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy Note II devices.

Huawei hasn't officially confirmed it will launch the Ascend Mate next week, but an invitation sent to Australian technology media today includes Ascend branding and shows an image of what appears to be the as-yet-unreleased device.

The invitation invites attendees to "experience Huawei's latest handset" and makes clear reference to "a bigger multimedia experience".

At the official unveiling of the Ascend Mate in February, Huawei claimed the phone has the largest screen of any smartphone in the world. The screen uses an IPS+ LCD panel, which is similar display technology to the one used by Apple on its iPhone 5.

Disappointingly, the 6.1in screen doesn't have a full HD resolution, instead making use of the more common 1280x720 resolution found on most of last year's flagship devices.

Huawei says the phone is "designed to fit comfortably in a single hand" but although the company quotes a thickness of 6.5mm thin at its narrowest part, the Ascend Mate is actually 9.9mm thick.

It weighs almost 200g so it will immediately be one of the heaviest smartphones on the Australian market.

The Huawei Ascend Mate is powered by a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor and has 2GB of RAM, though there's been no word yet on how much internal memory will be available.

Other features include a microSD card slot, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with HDR and a 1-megapixel HD front-facing camera for video calls.

The global model of the Huawei Ascend Mate unveiled in February was a 3G-only device, so it remains to be seen if Huawei will launch a model that will work on Australian 4G networks.
