Cisco to bring Wi-Fi to Melbourne Cup

Connected Stadium Wi-Fi solution to provide VRC’s guests with Wi-Fi access across Flemington

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has signed an agreement with Cisco Systems to deploy the vendor’s Connected Stadium Wi-Fi solution to provide Flemington racecourse with Wi-Fi connectivity in a technology implementation scheduled to be operational before the 2013 Melbourne Cup.

According to Cisco, the solutions provides the VRC with a single, highly scalable and secure platform for innovation and growth as well as the necessary flexibility to adapt to changing market needs.

In addition to enabling standard Internet use, guests will have access to specially designed services via their mobiles, including the ability to place bets, purchase food and beverages, and watch the races in HD video.

The vendor said that an added benefit is that the Wi-Fi will eliminate a large portion of mobile network congestion, meaning that calls and texts will not be disrupted by traffic.

“Reliable, real-time Wi-Fi access on our busiest race days will not only help visitors interact and share their race experiences with friends and families via social media, text, and video during the event; it also allows us to expand the ways in which our guests can engage with the venue on a more personalised level,” VRC corporate, finance and strategic initiatives executive general manager, Simon Love, said.

Cisco’s StadiumVision will also be deployed; it involves a series of HD displays and video walls throughout the venue to deliver digital content with multiple camera angles, race day information, and special promotions.
