Imation relaunches Windows on USB stick system

MXI product reappears in Imation clothing

Imation has relaunched the Stealth Zone embedded Windows on USB stick product it acquired when buying Canadian firm MXI Technology last June.

Now called Stealth Zone Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard (MWES), the system remains a way of carrying the Windows OS around on a USB stick, booting into a secure Windows 7 or XP shell from a host PC.

The key innovation is the Stealth Zone's cold booting approach which dispenses with the need for virtualisation, ideal for remote workers who need to wall off their home and work use of Windows.

The technology can configure device drivers automatically and, unlike virtualised alternatives, imposes no memory or resource limitations while encrypting user data and the OS itself using 256-bit AES.

Importantly, each Stealth Zone can be managed to using MXI's ACCESS Enterprise management platform with Active Directory policy enforcement.

"With more employees working outside of the office, organisations are looking for ways to capture the benefits of the mobile workforce, while at the same time empowering and securing mobile workers," said Nick Banks or Imation's Mobile Security division.

Imation bought MXI Security last June, which it followed up by buying the hardware division of IronKey. Both companies offered Imation software and hardware products in the niche of USB stick security, MXI's aimed at enterprises, IronKey's more at small business and home users.

What the company has added to the MXI-branded offering since buying it has not been confirmed by the company but appears to include enhanced software integration.

Capacities offered range from the usual 8GB to 64GB. Pricing has yet to be confirmed.
