IBM launches online sustainability forum

Companies to debate how to develop sustainable strategies that deliver long-term business benefits

IBM has launched an online forum where organisations can discuss ideas for how to create a sustainable future for business.

It follows IBM's 'Smarter Analytics for a Sustainable Future Summit at Start' in London last year, where the company said that using technology to analyse data can help firms achieve their business goals as well as become more sustainable. Start is a national initiative led by The Prince's Charities Foundation to promote sustainable living.

The online event, called Start Jam, is running for three days, from today to 5pm on 7 April. It runs on IBM's InnovationJam technology platform.

Senior directors from hundreds of UK public and private firms have signed up to join the Start Jam to discuss sustainable business strategies that can also deliver long-term business benefits, including B&Q, Citigroup, The Met Office, DEFRA, Marks and Spencer and Waitrose.

Six different subject areas will be debated, including how businesses can learn to collaborate in ways that drive growth while using fewer resources, how businesses can use tools and analytics to understand the growing amount of data, and how they can better match demand with supply in areas such as energy, food and supply chains.

"At the IBM Summit at Start we learnt businesses had a real hunger to make a difference, but no one organisation can do this on their own. The Start Jam will bring UK business leaders together to create a shared vision which aims to maximise sustainable business opportunities for the UK," said Stephen Leonard, chief executive of IBM UK and Ireland.

Registration for the Start Jam has started and is open throughout the event, with participation available on a first come, first served basis.
