IBM streamlines services offering

IBM introduces a new pre-engineered technology services model

Hoping to cut costs and speed delivery of IT systems, IBM has developed a set of technology templates for its services portfolio that will allow the company to more quickly stand up customer systems, the company announced Wednesday.

The company claims that using these templates can reduce customer IT management costs by 50 percent, and reduce the time to deployment by 60 percent. The templates are used to rapidly assemble pre-integrated sets of IT hardware and software, which IBM calls Assets.

IBM developed these assets by working with existing customers, --1,000 clients in more than 400 data centers across 170 countries.

"By infusing our industry-leading expertise, software capabilities, experience and best practices into our service offerings in a standardized, systematic method we can speed up the time it takes to do something very complex in a very reliable way," said Erich Clementi, IBM Global Technology Services senior vice president, in a statement.

The assets are preconfigured servers, storage arrays and other sets of IT equipment that can be easily integrated into complete systems. IBM tested the idea of using these assets when it assembled a set of preconfigured storage arrays to build its own internal storage system, and found that this approach had lowered the costs of storage procurement and implementation by 50 percent.

Establishing a uniform set of IT gear sets the stage for easier management, the company claims. The storage systems, for instance, feature a single set of management software. The servers include virtualization capabilities that will allow greater use of each server. Other assets are in place to set up unified communications platforms, reducing the need to set up multiple messaging networks.
