Apple exec confirms white iPhone on the way

White iPhone to be available 'this spring'

An Apple senior VP has confirmed that the company will have a white iPhone out this spring, but it's still a mystery as to whether it will be an iPhone 4 or iPhone 5.

Phil Schiller, SVP of worldwide product marketing at Apple, wrote via his verified Twitter account in response to a teenager's inquiry:  “The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!).”

IMOBY: Hunt for the great white iPhone

Schiller's tweet has set off a fresh round of white iPhone buzz in the blogosphere, including at Engadget.

The Schiller tweet backs up an Apple statement from October that it was waiting for spring for the white iPhone's release, dashing hopes late last year of a pre-Christmas arrival.  Apple has threatened several times to release the white iPhone, only to hold back, possibly due to manufacturing issues or as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has asserted, due to issues involving the paint and camera.

White iPhones have been spotted here and there in the wild, and Apple has even had to put the kibosh on bogus white iPhones selling on eBay. Though white iPhone-mania has subsided some of late in light of excitement surrounding the iPad 2 (which yes, Apple said would ship in black and white models from Day One).

It's hard to say though whether Schiller in this tweet was referring to an iPhone 4 or an iPhone 5, which has yet to be introduced (not that that has stopped Apple fans from speculating about what the iPhone 5 will look like). Apple watchers expect the company to debut the iPhone 5, or whatever the next edition of the smartphone is called, as soon as early June at the Worldwide Developers Conference. That could technically qualify a white iPhone 5 for arrival in spring, which doesn't end until June 21.

Industry watchers question, however, why Apple would bother to roll out a white iPhone 4 presumably right before an iPhone 5 would become available.  Apple historically has introduced iPhones in June/July.

Everything is black and white on Bob's Twitter account.
