Amazon adds CloudWatch to management tool

Management Console and CloudWatch allow administrators to keep better track of its cloud services

Amazon has added CloudWatch to the list of services that are integrated with its AWS (Amazon Web Services) Management Console, allowing IT staff to create alarms and troubleshoot from a browser.

The new CloudWatch tab on the AWS Management Console gives administrators access to a variety of performance metrics, including CPU and network utilization on an Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance, which is Amazon's service for renting out computing capacity in the cloud.

Administrators can create and manage alarms using the console's new Create Alarm wizard, which walks them through the process of choosing a performance metric, setting a threshold and setting up a notification, according to a blog post. An alarm could, for example, warn the IT department when any of the company's EC2 instances has a high CPU load, or when the average CPU load across all of the instances becomes too high.

The AWS Management Console can now be used to manage most parts of Amazon's cloud, including the newly announced Elastic Beanstalk, a tool aimed at making it easier for administrators to deploy and manage applications, according to Amazon.

Amazon isn't the only company offering tools to monitor its cloud services. There are also tools from third party companies such as VMware-owned Hyperic, ManageEngine and Monitis.
