Red Hat acquires Makara

With the acquisition of Makara, Red Hat moves into the realm of offering Platform-as-a-Service software

Enterprise open-source software vendor Red Hat has acquired cloud software provider Makara, Red Hat announced Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Red Hat plans to use Makara technologies as part of its Cloud Foundations portfolio.

"Cloud Foundations is about enabling customers and developers to have an easy on-ramp to the cloud. With the addition of Makara, we aim to further simplify application deployment and management," said Paul Cormier, president of Products and Technologies at Red Hat, in a statement.

Specifically, it can be used as part of Red Hat's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) portfolio. When combined with Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Middleware, the Makara platform could allow additional monitoring, rollback and scaling tools, according to the company.

"PaaS is becoming another market for software vendors looking to deliver compelling enterprise solutions in the cloud," said Rachel Chalmers, who is a research director at the 451 Group, in a statement.

"By acquiring the cloud technologies developed by Makara, Red Hat is now in a position to address this market by creating solutions for enterprises looking for deployment, management and auto-scaling capabilities to be baked into the core platform," she said.

Named after a mythical creature sometimes ridden by Hindu deities, Makara is based in Redwood City, California. The company has received financial backing from Shasta Ventures, Sierra Ventures, Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz.
