Samsung unveils its densest 2TB desktop hard drive

The EcoGreen F4 hard drive is Samsung's most eco-friendly model, meeting all RoHS requirements

Samsung Electronics Co. today announced what it's calling the world's highest-density hard disk drive for desktop systems.

The 3.5-in EcoGreen F4, or 4FEG, offers up to 2TB capacity in three 667GB platters. Samsung said the platters can store up to 880 hours of DVD video or 500,000 MP3 songs.

The internal F4EG drive offers better performance, lower power consumption and better reliability than older EcoGreen hard drives .

For example, Samsung's previous EcoGreen F3 hard drive also offered 2TB capacity -- but on four 500GB platters. The three-disk F4EG improves standby performance by 19% and uses 23% less power in standby mode than the F3EG, the company added.

"Storage-hungry multimedia professionals, gamers and home PC users continue to increase the amount of video, music, photo and other personal data they store and back-up," said I.C. Park, vice president of storage sales for Samsung's Semiconductor Business, in a statement. "The F4EG delivers all the benefits of a low-power drive yet features top performance quality and is environmentally friendly."

The new drive includes a 3.0 Gbit/sec SATA interface, Native Command Queuing and a 32MB buffer memory.

The company said it eliminated halogen and brominated flame-retardant from the 4FEG circuit board, making the device more eco-friendly. For instance, the new drive meets RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulations, which are applied worldwide.

The F4EG also uses Samsung's low noise operation technology SilentSeek and NoiseGuard to achieve quiet system operation.

The F4EG drive is available in 1.5TB and 2TB capacities and the retail price will start at $119.99. Initial shipments are scheduled to begin in early September.
