Microsoft confirms first Windows 7 zero-day bug

The deck headline and the third sentence of the ninth paragraph of the Computerworld (US) story, "Microsoft confirms first Windows 7 zero-day bug," which posted to the newswire Saturday, have been corrected to reflect that a workaround to the bug disables some services and not browsers. The deck and the ninth paragraph now read, respectively:

Urges users to block ports until a patch is ready, but workaround cripples services

Microsoft said it may patch the problem, but didn't spell out a timetable or commit to an out-of-cycle update before the next regularly-scheduled Patch Tuesday of Dec. 8. Instead, the company suggested users block TCP ports 139 and 445 at the firewall. Doing so, however, would disable a host of critical services, including network file-sharing and IT group policies.
