Facebook has shipped its US regional West Coast vice president Paul Borrud to head up its new Australian office.

Borrud will be charged with driving local advertising campaigns within for Australia and New Zealand. Facebook has more unique visitors than rival social media site MySpace, although it falls-short in terms of advertising revenue.

Media reports suggest the office may recruit about 10 staff, although the company has yet to confirm numbers or whether hires will be local.

Facebook allows contextual advertisements to appear alongside profiles based on users interests, profile details such as marital status, and news feeds.
