Facebook opens new APIs for app platform

Facebook is expanding its menu of APIs so third-party developers can access more member data via their apps.

External developers' applications can now access a wider range of information posted by Facebook members on the social-networking site.

The new APIs, launched Friday, give third-party applications access to status updates, notes, posted links and video clips, according to Facebook.

"We've seen increasing engagement with over 15 million users updating their status each day and sharing over 24 million links per month. We wanted to make sure this content and the ability to share this content was available through our standard APIs," wrote Chris Putnam, a Facebook engineer, in the company's official blog for developers.

The idea is for developers to create applications or features that encourage members to post and share more information. "For example, a travel application could make it really easy for users to create and share notes and upload photos and videos from a recent trip. Users could then display that content within a profile tab for that app," Putnam wrote.
