Sony to launch new Blu-ray Disc recorders

Sony has announced four new models of Blu-ray Disc recorders, due for release in Japan in early November.

The high end Sony Blu-ray recorder comes with a 500GB hard drive.

Depending on the capacity of the disc drive the price of the high-definition players will range from ¥140,000 (US$1,230) to ¥200,000. Toshiba, who are HD DVD format backers, produce a flagship recorder for roughly the same price.

When Sony first launched a Blu-ray recorder it was not able to record on dual-layer discs. The new models will be capable of recording up to 16 hours of programming on a dual-layer Blu-ray disc with a capacity of 50GB.

Sony said that it plans to produce 40,000 units of the Blu-ray disc recorders each month.

Sony said it is considering offering the recorders in Europe but does not have a launch timetable yet.
