Leung confirmed as AMD country manager

AMD's local office is gaining greater independence from its Singapore-based parent with the elevation of A/NZ sales manager, Caleb Leung, to the role of country manager. The chipmaker hasn't fielded a country manager for almost two years.

The last local manager, John Robinson, left the role in September 2004. Since that time, the Australian office has reported to AMD's vice-president of sales and marketing, South Asia-Pacific, Bryan Low.

Leung said he provided a new point for local staff to report to before business is escalated into Asia.

With the appointment now confirmed, the rundown to Christmas will be a busy time for the new country manager. AMD releases its much-anticipated AM2 socket processors in addition to conducting channel activities to encourage the adoption rate of dual-core in desktops and notebooks.

Leung also reserved some comments for arch-rival Intel, which recently released its Core 2 Duo dual core processor range.

"We see that our competitor is getting some product out to try and compete with us. I think that's great because we welcome competition," he said. "It will motivate the whole channel."

The rise to the top job has been meteoric for Leung, who joined AMD as a distribution manager in May 2005.
