Strong economy forges channel jobs growth

A strong economy plus continued recovery in the IT sector has pushed the channel jobs market to its best since the days of the tech boom.

Employment expert, Robert Olivier, said the number of vacancies in IT sales and management advertised online topped 2000 for the first time in three years - and the growth was set to continue.

The Olivier Internet Job Index for February recorded 118,922 job ads online during the month, up 2.35 per cent on the number of positions advertised in January.

The IT&T sector grew 4.62 per cent, with a 3.62 per cent increase for IT sales and management positions. But over the year, IT sales and management had enjoyed much faster growth.

The Index reported that IT sales and management positions had increased by 27.4 per cent over the three months from December to February, and by 59.79 per cent over the past year.

During February, the average weekly job count increased by 71 from 1962 to 2033, the Olivier Group reported.

Director Bob Olivier said the number of IT sales and management positions, which included IT management roles as well as channel positions, had been rising steadily throughout the year- a trend that continued into March.

These jobs, while paid at a slightly lower level as wages fell in the past three years, were typically better paid than helpdesk roles.

This showed IT sales and management was a more senior part of the IT sector, Olivier said.

The wider IT sector still had a trend towards cost-cutting, as shown by the recent MYOB-Solution 6 merger, but plenty of jobs were being created in the channel, he said.

Organisations were not finding them hard to fill.

"It is still a buyers market in IT but that situation is changing," Olivier said.

The number of graduate job vacancies has more than doubled over the past year.

IT had enjoyed spectacular bounceback after a pretty tough three years, he said.

The channel was also enjoying growth in the IT graduate market, Olivier said.
