Sony goes retro with a new record player

Use it to digitize those 33s and 45s

In an era of self-driving cars and wearable computers, Sony delivered something of a surprise at CES on Tuesday: a new record player.

It might sound strange, but Sony is planning to put the device on sale in the coming months so you can relive those 33s and 45s all over again. But perhaps more to the point, record them in the high-quality Hi-Res Audio format.

The PS-HX500 can be hooked up to a convention sound system but will also link with Windows and Mac computers so records can be digitized.

It will record into either WAV or DSD audio formats and from there play in Hi Res Audio equipment, or down-convert to MP3 for use in other players.

"Today return for vinyl is reaching across all generations," said Mike Fasulo, president and COO of Sony Electronics, during a CES news conference. "We’re listening to those who want to preserve their vinyl in high quality and enjoy their records at home and on the go."

For now, Sony doesn't have a precise launch date or price.
